Analysis and photos by husband and wife team Evan and Julie Coren.
Evan served for 19 years in the US government working on national security, classification, declassification, and controlled unclassified information issues, including over 7 years on the US National Security Council staff. Among Evan’s fun projects was leading the interagency approval of what information the US government keeps classified past 25 years and leading executive branch-wide the implementation of the controlled unclassified information program, which is a major post-9/11 reform to standardize how the Federal government protects and shares information that laws, regulations, or government-wide policies direct to be safeguarded. Evan has a BA in Government & Politics and a BA in History from the University of Maryland – College Park and a MSc in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics, where Evan focused on comparative constitutional design and electoral systems. Evan has also served in elected office – the Columbia Council, which is the equivalent of a city council for Evan’s hometown of Columbia, MD – and worked on a wide variety of political campaigns in roles ranging from volunteer to campaign manager.
For fun Evan loves traveling, hiking, camping, reading history books, theater (particularly anything funny and/or musicals), board games, college basketball (Go Terps!), cooking and baking, and any chance to learn something new.
Julie survived her early career in accounting working in industries that spoke to her love for travel. Getting to her desk at Marriott International meant walking past teams of designers at work. This inspired her to add to her BS in Accounting from George Mason University, an AAS in Communication Design from Northern Virginia Community College. She went on to work with students at the Corcoran College of Art + Design, Georgetown University, and the Library of Congress. Along the way, she spent a summer in San Gemini, Italy immersed in a preservation of books and paper program and volunteering at an eco yoga park in Argentina. There she discovered joy in cooking, finding it meditative. She loves trying new eats and drinks, particularly on her travels. Along with travel Julie has a deep love for photography, children’s books, and ballet.
